Selby firm’s Amazon bed

A SELBY based aquarium plant supplier has been selected to create an Amazonian river bed for the piranha at SEA LIFE London Aquarium.

The home of the piranha at the capital’s tourist attraction has been completely renovated by aquascaping experts at PlantedTanks of Prospect Way in Selby, which has been in business for three years.

Owner Tony Newsom-Virr said: “Think Grand Designs for fish. A skilled design team was called in to completely transform the tank into a perfect replica of the wild with beautiful plant life, wood and rocks found in their native South American waters.

“The team have created a bespoke new display inspired by the flooded forest of the Amazon basin. It’s underwater landscaping-aquascaping.”

The new display is the largest of its kind in the world and includes 18 different varieties of underwater plants.

It is home to 20 fully grown red belly piranha and countless tetras. The design is composed in such a way that a visitor can take a journey through an Amazonian river bed. The piranhas move in known pathways along the trenches, whereas the tetra will take shelter in the plants.

Aquarists at SEA LIFE London Aquarium hope that the new home will create the ideal conditions for the piranha to breed.

Aquarist Graham Banton said: “I’m really excited about the new display because it is really a creative piece of art. The guys at PlantedTanks have created a magical environment for the fish to live in and for our guests to see. It’s a brilliant addition to the aquarium and will be a wonderful home for our little piranha friends.

“Seeing them in this display will be the closest most people will ever get to seeing them in their natural territory.”

Mr Newsom-Virr added: “It’s been a real honour to be selected to create a bespoke display for the SEA LIFE London Aquarium.

“We focus on natural solutions and no chemicals are used to treat any of the tanks. Fish respond to this focus on health and vitality and the new display will look spectacular for guests visiting the attraction.”

A video of the work that has been carried out is available in store for customers to watch.
