CUSTOMERS to a newly opened hairdressers in Selby will not only be promised lovely locks from its proprietor but a close encounter with the world of modern art.

Matt Black’s new salon, on Brook Street, opened to its first clients this week.

And amid its scissors and straighteners, its curlers and crimpers, visitors found the premises were also a homage to the art world, thanks to Matt’s famous cousin, Paul Karslake.

“Paul’s airbrushing work has been seen by millions,” said Matt, who has moved to Selby from Oxford.

“He has created airbrush designs on the Rolling Stones’ guitars and his work also adorns the Gordon Ramsay restaurant walls.”

And Paul has given Matt, who opened his doors on Tuesday, a chair he has airbrushed, which has taken pride of place in the salon.

“I’ve given the salon a funky and quirky look and the chair fits in beautifully. It looks fabulous,” said Matt, who set up his business as part of the new Business Enterprise scheme, backed by local MP Nigel Adams.

“It’s certainly making people stop and take a look.”

He is currently coiffeuring on his own but says he is looking to employ two or three more stylists to join him.

Although he goes under the name of Matt Black, he says his real name is also Paul Karslake. “It was a joke between our dads, but I have changed my name to avoid confusion!”
