IT’S a sign of the times!
Church Fenton’s Wildlife Habitat Protection Trust has just taken out a 99 year lease on Hambleton Hough from Selby District Council.
Martin Blakey, the charity’s chief executive, said: “We now have a new sign in place so that local residents and visitors to the site know that it is under new ownership. We feel this is very important because this particular site is used daily by members of the public, and we have already received feedback from residents who have commented without really knowing what the management plan involves! Both myself and Craig Blakey’s contact details are on the notice board, and we are happy to answer any queries that may be forthcoming.”
Initial plans for the woodland include a full environmental survey, which will dictate how best the woodland can be managed and improved.
Martin added: “We would work from a template that involves a complete overall of the woodland. To begin with, priority would be given to removing any dangerous or dead trees that may pose a danger to the general public. This would be followed by opening up the canopy in different areas of the wood to encourage new growth and enable us to plant native trees, this is very important in woodland of this type as the acidic soil provides limited opportunity for native species to develop.
“Following on from this we would then concentrate on developing and maintaining habitats for the varied range of wildlife present on the site. This would involve providing suitable nesting and feeding areas to accommodate species contained within the wood. This practice has proved hugely successful in our other woodland sites, especially at the Old Park Plantation in Church Fenton where we have almost 250 nesting boxes that have accommodated Owls, woodpeckers and many other species of birds and wildlife.
The Trust is also celebrating a successful festive season.
Martin said: “We organised a spectacular winter wonderland trail. The trail weaved its way through the 15 acre woodland, and around every corner there were scenes that put everyone in the Christmas spirit! The displays this year really were fantastic, from life size Christmas card scenes, to a showstopping display above the lake that really took the breath away and had the children mesmerized.”
