QUOTING influences including third-wave ska, the Hallelujah Chicken Run Band, Brazilian baile funk, Congolese thumb pianos, Repo Man, Bollywood and Beethoven, among many others, Contra is the ultimate in eclectic music.
In tracks like White Sky, you can also catch snippets of the Magic Numbers' sun-drenched harmonies, Mika's falsetto vocals and Paul Simon's Graceland, and certainly Contra contains the sort of stunningly simplistic yet powerful lyrics the latter is so renowned for.
This is music with very few boundaries, without constraints yet seriously steeped the history of music. And what it does more than anything is get you on your feet, wildly moshing around your room like a nutter. How the neighbours will talk!
There's much more depth to this record than the band's extraordinary self-titled debut LP. They're so exciting, each new track is like taking a roller coaster ride through a different land full of weird creatures and fascinating legends.
Soak it up as this is among the most adventurous music out there at the moment. Utter genius!
And if you like what you hear, catch the band live and local at Leeds O2 Academy on February 9.
