EMERGING from South London's paisley underground, Peckham five-piece The Lea Shores – who take their name from a David Crosby tune – are single-handedly poised to lead 2009's psych-rock revival.
Fronted by twins Simon and Nick Webb, and joined by Jamie Smith (guitars), Gabriel Lloret (bass) and Nick Foot (drums), the group produce a distinctly ethereal form of guitar-driven, string-laden psychedelia.
Aided by violinits and Brian Eno cohort Nell Catchpole, the album is both shamanic and hallucinatory, producing colossal, swirling walls of sound underpinned by hypnotic harmonies and folk melodies.
Influences are clear, obvious and too many to list here, but The Lea Shores are no tribute act. Their music is band up to date, irrespective of its dream-like qualities. It might be spaced out, but it's very much tuned in!
The calibre of the support gigs the band is now picking up (Kasabian and The Dandy Warhols, to name but two) also suggests this is a band destined for greatness. And this self-titled LP is a superb starting points for something much bigger and better yet to come. A truly stunning opening gambit.
