TV regular Ian on stage for the last time
The Ian Macmillan Orchestra.
POET, comic, raconteur and BBC TV and radio regular Ian Macmillan along with his five piece orchestra appear at Selby Town Hall later this month with their final ever show.
The group will present a scintillating night of poems, music, comedy and improv like nothing you’ve ever seen before on Friday November 23.
A spokesman said: “A steaming, pulsing collection of songs and musically illuminated stories with tales of family, longing, love and long histories. Told by an orchestra, ring-mastered by composer Luke Carver Goss and whirlingly dervished by the Bard of Barnsley and English National Opera poet-in-residence, Ian McMillan, the audience will be wowed with a fairground of delights where stories of iPod’s, first gigs, cuts and quandaries abound.”
Ian McMillan has been poet in residence at Barnsley Football Club, Northern Spirit Trains and Humberside Police, written comedy for radio and plays for the stage and worked extensively for Radios 1,2,3,4 and Five Live as well as for Yorkshire Television and BBC2’s Newsnight Review.
He hosts weekly BBC Radio 3 show The Verb and is a regular on Coast, Pick of the Week, You and Yours, The Culture Show, The Today Programme, Just a Minute and Have I Got News For You? He was featured with his Orchestra on The South Bank Show as well as on Loose Ends, Late Junction and the Mike Harding Show.
Ian’s orchestra is led by composer Luke Carver Goss whose music includes ‘Pure Gold: a 4x4 Relay’, part of PRS for Music Foundation’s New Music 20x12, commissions for BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, musicals, theatres and dance ensembles. He records and performs with his own band, the acclaimed Carver Trio, the Balkan singer Tea Hodzic, jazz singer Tina May and story-teller Daniel Morden in the group The Devil’s Violin.
Selby Town Council arts officer Chris Jones said: “Ian McMillan is nothing short of wonderful and a fabulous ambassador for Yorkshire.
“He is a really great entertainer, full of warmth, good humour and fantastic stories backed by a stunning collection of virtuoso musicians wielding everything from guitar and violin to nyckelharpa and hurdy-gurdy! After five years on the road entertaining discerning theatre goers across the land, Ian and the gang have chosen Selby as the location for their last ever show. It’s already going to be a night to remember, so why not come along and give them the send-off they deserve!”
Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm show, and tickets are £14 in advance or £16 on the door.
