SIX-PIECE Sergeant Buzfuz feature violins, dulcimer and mandolin in a mash-up of pop, psychedelic, Celtic folk, punk, improv and drone-rock.
You could say, then, they're a little eclectic! Any band that can write a song about middle ages popes has my complete respect, even if it's one of the most bizarre things you've ever heard! It's definitely like nothing you're going to hear for a long time, which in itself makes it immensely intriguing.
At the heart of Sergeant Buzfuz is Sheffield-born singer songwriter Joe Murphy, who often plays solo, particularly outside of London. His vocals are sometimes strained and edgy, but always heartfelt and passionate.
High Slang features some seriously good songs, from the opening gambit God To Holloway through the almost jaunty In The Back Of My Cab to the fourth instalment of the Popes story. The lyrics are interesting, the music angular and challenging and the whole experience something to treasure.
