Larry Jon Wilson: Larry Jon Wilson

I HAVE to confess to knowing very little about Larry Jon Wilson before this CD and its accompanying press release landed on my desk.

And it appears I'm not alone.

Larry Jon Wilson is one of a very rare, and dying breed. Revered by his more illustrious peers as the best in the business, he never shared their fame, choosing instead to tread his own path through life, shunning the big bucks to retain complete and utter control over his creative output.

Hardly surprising, then, it has been almost three decades since his last album. So it is I came to put this CD in my player with no preconceptions as to what I was about to hear.

What I did hear near enough blew me away. Here's an intimate album of 12 tracks, all recorded in a week and from first and only takes. Not interested in perfection, Larry John Wilson wanted to keep it real and personal, and this stripped-down honesty almost takes your breath away. He might as well be sat in the corner of your room, supping on a cold beer strumming out the workings of his genius mind.

It reminds me of the late works of Johnny Cash, but comparisons are wasted and derisory. Larry Jon Wilson is nothing if not his own man. He keeps his own council yet stretches out a hand to those who'll listen.

Fans Willie Nelson, Kristofferson, John Prine, Guy Clarke and Steve Earle all know Larry Jon Wilson is the king of Nashville. Now it's time for others to discover why.
