Freda Viola: The Turn
FREDO himself best sums up his sound: "When people ask, I usually say Beach Boys meets Sigur Ros."
Listen to opening track of debut album The Turn – The Turn, unsurprisingly! – and you couldn't sum up the music more succinctly and accurately. And it's a marriage made in heaven!
Relying heavily on his voice as his main weapon of choice, with a degree of vocal harmonies and electronics thrown in for good measure, and you've got one of the most adventurous and ambitious albums of the year to date.
In some ways, this had a similar impact on me as The Fleet Foxes album did last year, and there are some similarities her in simplicity of production. It's an album full of sunshine and sorrow, playful humour and sombre beauty, with an almost dream-like quality in songs like Friendship Is.
The Turn is released with a sister DVD featuring eight of his 'cluster' videos and other experimental performance films, including alternate versions of key album tracks plus a gorgeous rendition of Silent Night with the Norwegian basso singer Nils Christian Fossdal.
But more than anything, it's Fredo Viola's stunningly pure, clean and engaging voice that carries the album and lingers long in the memory. Little wonder Massive Attack asked him to record guest vocals on their forthcoming album. This is destined to be one of 2009's rare surprise treats, and the theme music to a million TV ads! Sweet and satisfying.
