Thought for the Week by Richard Cooke

I WONDER what plans you have for 2013. Holidays, getting married, or some other special occasion?

Whatever our big plans, for most of us the year will be filled up largely with work, shopping, and the day to day routine. As I look back on 2012 I don’t want to be as busy in the year ahead. So much done but what was it all about? What did it all achieve? What will feel really worthwhile as I look back at the end of this year?

Perhaps over the holidays you have had a little time away from routine, a chance to reflect on your life and what life is all about!

We are all different – some of us are activists who love nothing better than to be doing something; some are more thoughtful, reflective; others like ideas they can work on practically, and others just like ideas!

But we can all be busy in our different ways, with our hands or with our minds, and end up filling our lives with business. When was the last time you were still, really still?

There once were two sisters who were very different, called Mary and Martha, who welcomed Jesus into their home. Mary sat down in front of the Lord and was listening to what he said. Martha was worried about all that had to be done.

Finally, she went to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it bother you that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to come and help me!”

The Lord answered, “Martha, Martha! You are worried and upset about so many things, but only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen what is best, and it will not be taken away from her” (from the Bible, CEV, Luke 10).

For Mary, coming close to Jesus was what was truly important in life. And so it is for Christians today, although we also get too busy too often.

Dare you stop and think about what life is really about? Dare you, in the stillness, open your heart to God who made you? From that stillness, that openness, what sort of activity might come?

Perhaps something a little less ‘hamster-wheelish’, a little less busy, and a little more meaningful, more lasting, more life-giving – to you and those around you. God be with you and bless you in 2013.
