IN his letter, 'Real' police plea (Selby Times, December 24), Bill Eastwood, of Riccall, made a plea for 'real coppers' and decried Police Community Support Officers or PCSOs as 'well-meaning and pointless'.
As local councillors, we have worked very closely with the two PCSOs in our area – Laura and Annie – and are very well aware of the positive impact they have made in our neighbourhoods.
Mr Eastwood completely misunderstands the purpose of PCSOs.
They are not meant to replace police officers, but to complement them.
They are embedded in their 'patches' building relationships with residents, vulnerable people, community groups and youngsters.
Those relationships strengthen the police's community links, building trust and giving reassurance to many, especially the elderly. They are also proactive in dealing with anti-social behaviour and working with Selby District Council to deal with disruptive individuals and families.
Many people, especially the elderly and vulnerable, are pleased to have a PCSO knock on their door after they have been a victim of crime.
Unlike police officers, PCSOs can spend time talking to victims and giving them crime prevention advice. Mr Eastwood considers that to be 'touchy feely', but to many victims of crime the reassurance and support they get from our PCSOs is important.
Like Mr Eastwood, we would like to see more police officers out catching the 'bad guys' but not at the expense of our invaluable Police Community Support Officers.
