SHERBURN Renaissance project is still on track despite the shock resignation of a key project officer.
This is the message from Selby District Council leader Coun Mark Crane this week after Helen Rowland walked out of her post leaving the project in jeopardy.

Coun Crane has now confirmed former planning and economic development officer Helen Drye has stepped into the role.

He added: "Helen Drye has taken on a short-term contract to see renaissance completed in Sherburn.

"Unfortunately, her predecessor handed in her resignation. We were disappointed to receive this, but we must now move on."

The ambitious £1.4 million scheme will see redevelopment of the village centre to make it more pedestrian-friendly and give easier access to shops and local services.

It also aims to enhance the look of the village's main street, with a new clock tower as a focal point and a brand new village square.

Coun Crane (right) confirmed the project was on track and work would start soon, despite fears it would flounder due to a cash shortfall.

He added: "As far as I'm concerned, the scheme will be delivered on time.

"When I met the Sherburn Renaissance Town Team about two weeks ago, I assured them we would support this scheme, within reason.

"What I meant was any shortfall up to five figures we would definitely make up for. If the shortfall was six figures, we would consider what help we could give.

"The project has been discussed for a long time and we, like the people of Sherburn, want to see it completed. I'm confident it will go ahead."
Sherburn Parish Council chairman Coun Malcolm Dowson welcomed Coun Crane's comments, and said he was looking forward to work starting soon.

He spoke after the project had been discussed at the parish council meeting last Monday, adding: "Helen Rowland did a good job and we were all sad to see her go. However, Coun Crane has assured the Town Team work will begin with council cash backing.

"Everyone in Sherburn is looking forward to this project."
