AN ANGRY parish councillor said new traffic plans for Sherburn and South Milford would continue to bring chaos to the area's streets.
The scheme, which has been blasted by Sherburn Parish Council chairman Coun Malcolm Dowson, was unveiled at Monday night's North Yorkshire County Council Selby Area Committee meeting held in the village.

Traffic orders were imposed last March forcing HGVs weighing more than 7.5 tonnes to use Moor Lane at Sherburn to access the A162, instead of travelling along Low Street and over speed humps in South Milford, between 5.30 and 10am and 3.30 and 6pm.

New amendments change these times to between 5.30 and 8am and 5 and 6.30pm.

But Coun Dowson said: "This isn't good enough. The only solution is to remove heavy goods traffic from these areas altogether.

"Speed bumps have been put in place in these areas without notifying the parish council, and I feel these should be removed."

Area committee clerk Paul Atkin said: "It was also decided a further report be brought to the committee at the end of a six-month trial period. Also that officers continue to work with Mytum & Selby waste recycling company about the impact the orders have on their business, and that officers continue to consider alleviating problems of traffic in Garden Lane."

But Coun Dowson added: "It should be time to concentrate on the renaissance project for Sherburn to turn the village into an attractive place, not to still have problems with lorries.

"As part of renaissance, the road through Sherburn will be narrowed, and if heavy traffic is still allowed to come through South Milford and Sherburn, it could be an accident waiting to happen."

Area committee member and county councillor for Sherburn Jim Snowball said NYCC would try to find a solution to traffic problems for both pedestrians and the area's businesses.

He added: "Problems with heavy traffic driving through the area trying to get to Sherburn industrial estate have almost been alleviated thanks to the police, Trading Standards and other agencies.

"This will continue to be monitored. The committee is also trying to find alternative access and egress for traffic going in and out of Mytum & Selby. It's essential to have a trial period for the new traffic plan for this area to try and resolve outstanding issues."
