A PERSONAL battle against cancer will culminate in a triumphant long distance run on Sunday when a plucky grandmother competes in the Race for Life.
Lesley Jones, of Fir Tree Way in Thorpe Willoughby, will line-up alongside her three friends and be cheered on by her husband Graham, three children and eight grandchildren when she runs five kilometres around York Racecourse for Cancer Research.
The 62-year-old first competed in the all-ladies' fund-raising challenge four years ago before her own diagnosis of cancer, and has since had a mastectomy, lumpectomy, suffered ovarian cancer and undergone a series of chemotherapy treatments.
She said: "I had my final bout of surgery only two weeks ago. Now I'm taking part in this great race to raise funds for Cancer Research.
"It will be quite an uplifting and emotional experience when I race.
"I did this four years ago because my younger sister had cancer, and
now I'm doing it for all cancer sufferers. I have a fantastic group of friends, whom I've known for at least ten years, and they've supported me throughout this traumatic time, as have my family and the amazing
medical staff in York and at St James hospitals.
"I don't like to dwell on what has happened and I look to the future,
starting with this race."
