ANGRY campaigners are calling for urgent action three decades after an appeal was first made to repair a railway level crossing.
Hensall Parish Council chairman Coun Howard Newitt said an increasing number of vehicles are being damaged negotiating the Station Road "notorious" crossing.

He was forced to replace shock absorbers on his own car after it was buffeted by uneven surfaces across the tracks.

But persistent pleas to Network Rail and its predecessors during the course of the past 30 years have fallen on deaf ears.

Coun Newitt added: "We need Network Rail to act soon.

"This has been rumbling on for many years and we need it resolving. The company always seem to be down here but the repairs we need never seem to get done."

Network Rail spokesman Keith Lumley said: "We recently met with Her Majesty's Railway Inspectorate to discuss the level crossing.

"HMRI agrees that while it's not an immediate hazard to vehicles, particularly if they're driven sensibly over the crossing, some work is required.

"Unfortunately, there's no quick-fix solution to the problem, which is
seemingly worse because the road and railway are on a skew and not at right angles to each other.

"What we're looking at is a combination between lifting the track and lowering the central beam, which supports level crossing surface units.

However, this is a significant project, which will take time to plan and deliver."
