OFFICIAL reopening of South Milford Post Office was performed this week by well-known TV personality Sir Jimmy Savile.
The Leeds born and bred celebrity – famous for his hit Jim'll Fix It show – visited the village to open the once threatened facility following a refurbishment by new owner and sub-post mistress Lara Layton.

And after the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Post Office and shop, Sir Jimmy spent time at Lara's Mill Farm Tea Rooms nearby chatting with customers and even helping staff to serve up traditional cream teas.

Lara said: "Sir Jimmy was very friendly and wonderful with the visitors, and he made everyone feel welcome and relaxed by taking the time to chat to each of them, as well as staff members. Everyone seemed to have a great time."

The Post Office opening has been welcomed by residents who feared the facility lost forever after former postmistress Joan Shaw retired, and it was later added to a closure hit-list.

And the wait is finally over, with villagers able to use the new counter from today after problems with electrical and secure communication lines caused delays.

Lara, pictured with Sir Jim, added: "It was wonderful to finally be able to celebrate our opening after so much uncertainty and delays, and I hope the service will be well used."
