CONTROVERSIAL plans to expand Hemingbrough's sewage works have been approved, it emerged today.
The £2.1 million scheme won support from North Yorkshire County Council's planning committee at a meeting yesterday.
Yorkshire Water capital communications manager Dafydd Williams said: "The committee's decision was unanimous, which we hope is an indication we can move forward quite quickly, although we acknowledge some residents set up an action group to oppose our plans."
Villagers in Orchard End and surrounding areas kicked up a stink about the bid to expand the works to include two additional settlement tanks, two humus tanks and other controlling equipment.
They said septic tanks could be built just 200 metres from the nearest property, and feared prevailing winds could blow "horrendous" smells towards the village.
