A CLAMPDOWN on poaching was the hot topic at the second Selby District Rural Watch meeting last week.
The meeting on January 16 proved to be a huge success, with more than 70 members attending.

PC Kevin Kelly and PCSO Laura Simpson (pictured) highlighted several problem areas topped by poaching and including advice on securing farm and plant equipment.

Discussions included feedback on Operation Jumbo (December's poaching clampdown by police) after the menace was raised by landowners and farmers.

PCSO Simpson said: "The public support we've had for both the new Rural Watch Scheme and Operation Jumbo has been overwhelming. It shows the strength of feeling in relation to rural crime.

"We currently have several ongoing prosecutions for criminal damage to crops, badger baiting and hunting with dogs, and we're extremely confident they will all have positive outcomes."

She said as the watch scheme continued to grow, new members were always welcome.

Membership includes registration to an automated messaging system and provision of Rural Watch signage.

Anyone interested can contact PCSO 3515 Laura Simpson for further information at laura.simpson@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk or on 0845 6060247.
