LONG-RUNNING proposals to build a 50-bedroom care home near Barkston Ash have finally been approved despite dozens of objections.
Barchetser Healthcare applied to demolish its existing premises on land occupied by a Grade II Listed church at historic Scarthingwell Park and replace it with a new building offering the bedrooms and 15 close care apartments.

But protesters gathered petitions containing dozens of names opposing the bid amid concerns about the impact it would have on the area, which is on greenbelt land, as well as highways and increased traffic flow issues.

One resident in Orchard Close even lobbied Her Majesty The Queen and MP John Grogan in an effort to torpedo the scheme.

But Selby District Council planners granted permission at their meeting last week.
