HIGH achievers and students who overcame adversity were honoured in a special A-level ceremony.

Sheffield Hillsborough and Brightside MP David Blunkett presented certificates and awards at Sheffield College’s Hillsborough campus.

Robert Johns, aged 18, was presented with the Sheffield Hallam University Annual Academic Achievement Award shield for his A* and double A grades. The Hillsborough teen is now studying civil engineering at Newcastle University.

Lauri Chapman, 19, from Gleadless, received the Howells Solicitors sponsored trophy for the highest achieving law student, following a partnership set up with the law firm this year.

She is the first person in her family to attend university, and is studying law at Sheffield. She said: “I’m really chuffed to get this award after all the hard work I’ve put in to my studies. I love university - it’s hard work but worth it.”

A third award was handed to Shiregreen 19-year-old Samantha Aldam, honoured for her achievement over adversity.

Samantha, who has Asperger Syndrome, is studying animal biology at Nottingham Trent University - the first person in her family to enter higher education.

She said: “I am really enjoying my university studies.”

Almost 500 students completed courses at Sheffield College last summer, when it achieved a best-ever pass rate of 97.41 per cent.

Former education secretary David Blunkett said: “The transformation in the lives of young people in the north of Sheffield from the opportunities offered by Hillsborough College is clearly demonstrated by the success of these students.”
