A GENEROUS Sheffield restaurant boss has repaid a regular customer who had more than £1,000 stolen by a waiter who worked there – and sacked the thief.

Shocked Sajid Quader, who owns Butler’s Balti House on Broad Lane in the city centre, said he had no idea his employee Akhtar Mahmood had appeared before a court until he read a report in The Star this week.

Mahmood, of Balfour Road, Darnall, was ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work after admitting stealing the cash from the account of disabled grandad Leslie Morton.

Sajid has now repaid Les the £700 outstanding – even though Mahmood was ordered by a judge to pay it back in compensation – and fired the thief on the same day the report was published.

Sajid said: “I didn’t know anything about this whatsoever – I just found out from The Star.

“It was a big shock. If we had been aware, we would have taken some action before now.

“I have been to see Les and I have paid him the £700 which is still owed to him. At the end of the day it’s not right on him what happened.

“Mahmood has also been sacked.”

Sheffield Magistrates’ Court heard Mahmood, aged 46, had taken cash out at banks and William Hill betting shops using Mr Morton’s bank card, to pay off gambling debts.

Mobility scooter-using Les, aged 73, from Oughtibridge, only realised the money was missing when he went to play the lottery online.

When police identified the culprit, Les was shocked - as he believed Mahmood to be ‘a good friend’.

Today Les, a former fruit and vegetable shop owner, said: “Sajid is a lovely man and I’m really chuffed he came to see me and repay my money, even though none of it was his fault.

“I’m really glad to get the money back.

“We’ll be going back to the restaurant for a meal as soon as we can.”
