Renaissance cash joy
SHERBURN residents are celebrating funding worth £1.4 million that will see the area transformed as part of renaissance plans.
Designs for Low Street and the surrounding area – exclusively revealed in the Selby Times last month – will now become reality after Selby District Council's renaissance team finally received the green light from Yorkshire Forward last Thursday.
Renaissance manager Martyn Pettifer said: "The whole project was totally dependent on this money, and although we were hopeful of success, we're delighted and relieved to have secured the funding."
The Sherburn Living Streets project will see Low Street transformed with a continental village character and a square for markets, events and socialising. This feature could link Low Street, Wolsey Parade and Church View, with a limestone clock tower as its centrepiece.
Other eye-catching features include a textured, reflective pattern running through the square, rough-cut seating, Yorkshire paving and colourful acer and cherry trees.
Sherburn Town Team chairman Bryan Sissons said: "This is excellent news for both Sherburn and town team members, as it means three years of hard work can now be put into action.
"Thanks to the input of local residents, businesses and councillors, we hope by this time next year, we will have created a nice place for people passing through to stop, shop and enjoy a bite to eat, as well as put back the real community atmosphere that has long been missing."
Praising the team's efforts, Coun Mike Jordan said: "I'd like to thank the village's town team members. Their efforts have ensured the village centre will get the long-planned revamp it deserves. They've done sterling work and battled many setbacks thrown at them."
Sherburn Parish Council chairman Coun Malcolm Dowson added: "Obviously, I'm delighted. This has been a long-awaited decision and the plans are the best way forward for the village.
"I'm sure the project will have its hiccups. The proposed narrowing of Low Street will only worsen the problems caused by the HGV diversion. But on a positive note, it might help resolve planning problems with the long-awaited Red Bear refurbishment. It would be great to see Sherburn's worst eyesore transformed on the back of these renaissance improvements."
