WONDERFUL news, Selby awarded a £1 million support grant (Selby Times, December 13).

What is not so good news is the fact that there will be no money spent north of the old Toll Bridge, why?

Such an omission appears to harp back to the days when Barlby and Osgodby were in the East Riding. In reality this antiquated thinking has persisted ever since the boundary relocation took place.

The north side of Selby does not feature in any real development (other than housing). It would have been beneficial to Selby had some of the award been spent tidying up the approach to the town along the A63.

The students of Selby High School will also benefit from the Selby award, this has to be good news for the school.

However, there are three secondary schools in the immediate Selby area, two of which would appear not to be benefiting from the award.

Selby High School has over the years been a beneficiary of many awards from NYCC, usually at the expense of Barlby High School and to a lesser degree, Brayton College. One would hope that Selby High School finds a way to encompass students from the other two secondary school therefore sharing the new learning experience Mr Eckersley talks off.
