On track with rail firm over parking
Commuters are celebrating after rail bosses backed down and agreed to reimburse fines for illegal parking at South Milford station.
The decision follows a site visit two weeks ago between Northern Rail’s Drew Haley and Selby and District Rail Users’ Group secretary Reg French, followed by a meeting between the pair last week to thrash out a deal.
The pair met in Leeds and it was agreed that a recommendation be made to senior Northern Rail directors that the notice prohibiting parking outside marked bays should be removed.
Mr French said: “This is a relief for everyone. Northern Rail has agreed to withdraw restrictions on parking. All those who have been fined recently will be reimbursed.”
He thanked Drew Haley for his understanding of the problems faced by those parking and said the fines had threatened to turn people away from rail to road.
Mr French added: “After the meeting last week I gained certain reassurances. It seems that now the policy agreed with Northern Rail on parking will not only apply to South Milford but also to Church Fenton. It is also likely to lead to a review at all the other stations it covers throughout the northern network.
“Northern Rail has issued an apology to SADRUG and they will now review procedures on other local issues in order to become more customer-focused.
“Some customers have been lost at South Milford and elsewhere.”
Northern Rail’s Drew Haley told the Selby Times this week: “Car parking management at South Milford and Church Fenton stations has been undergoing review after local concerns at our approach.
“Since meeting with members of the Selby and District Rail Users’ Group, a recommendation has been made and going forward we shall not enforce any tickets that have been issued.”
He added: “Following the recommendation, we will not ticket passengers who park outside marked bays as long as they do not cause any obstruction to other vehicles or access.
“We will however, reserve the right to manage any cars that cause a blockage and would ask users of the car park to respect this.
“We would also like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
