No major event for Selby’s Olympic torch
NORTH Yorkshire Councillors are to be urged to freeze council tax for the second year running when they meet to consider the authority’s budget later this month.
The council’s Executive on Tuesday agreed to recommend acceptance of the Government’s offer of a one-off grant of £6m to avoid the need for a tax increase.
The authority has to find savings of some £69m over a four year period as a result of the Government’s spending reviews.
Around half the savings are the result of internal efficiencies and restructuring.
Coupled with some targeted service reductions, the council says it is on course to deliver all of the savings required in the current financial year and the possibility of achieving the necessary savings for 2012-13 is described as “strong.”
The Executive’s recommendations will be considered by the full council at a meeting on February 15.
Council leader, John Weighell, said: “A freeze on council tax next year is worth about £26 for the average Band D household, and in such difficult times the council is anxious to minimise the financial burden for residents as much as possible.
“Although we must make tough spending decisions, we will continue to do everything possible to protect frontline services and the most vulnerable in our society.”
The Executive’s recommendations will be considered by the full council at a meeting on February 15.
