FIVE new governors from the Doncaster public have been elected to take part in running Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

Members of the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Trust have voted the hospital governors in the latest round of elections, with the results were confirmed this week. The successful candidates will officially take up their seats on the Board of Governors on April 1 for a three year term.

In the Doncaster Public constituency Maureen Young, George Webb, Eddie Dobbs and Howard Taylor held on to their seats and were re-elected for a further term of office. New to the board of governors are Dev Das, Dennis Benfold, Michael Addenbrooke, Bruce Lowis and William Skelley.

Election results in the Bassetlaw Public constituency saw Susan Overend holding on to her Public Governor seat. Newcomer Hazel Brand secured the other Bassetlaw Public Governor seat.

In the Staff Governor categories, Roy Underwood, head of information governance and registration authority manager, was successful in his re-election bid in the Non-Clinical Staff class. Andrew Swift, maintenance craftsman, was also successful, and takes his staff governor seat in the Non-Clinical Staff class. Consultant paediatrician Dr Vivek Desai was elected unopposed to the Medical and Dental staff class.

Chris Scholey Trust Chairman said: “Congratulations to the successful candidates. We are very pleased that so many people stood in these elections, demonstrating their enthusiasm and commitment to their local hospitals. Thank you to everyone who took part, and to all those who voted.”

The elections were carried out by the Electoral Reform Services. The turnout in the Bassetlaw Public constituency was 28.1 per cent; Doncaster Public constituency was 15.8 per cent, and 12.2 per cent of eligible staff members voted in the Staff Governor election.

As a foundation trust, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals is accountable to local people, patients and staff. Its 17,000 members are represented by their elected Governors, who feed the views of their members into the Trust to shape future services.
