Consultation could save swimming pool

RESIDENTS of Sherburn are being urged to take part in a consultation that could help save the village high school’s swimming pool.

The Sherburn High School pool has recently had its funding reduced, which could potentially result in it being closed down.

One aim of the consultation is to possibly have the pool opened up to the general public.

The School Action Group is urging locals to take part in the consultation. Previous consultations have identified that villagers want to see more available sports facilities opened in and around Sherburn.

A spokesman said: “This could be an opportunity to do just that. With the recent Olympics and Paralympics being so successful, the legacy will live on through Sport England and other funding bodies providing vital grassroots funding to support the need for new and improved sports facilities and amenities.”

The consultation and appointment of a consultant to oversee it comes after the school received £5,000 of grant funding from the Big Lottery Awards for All programme.

The consultant will work with the School Action Group to develop a feasibility report identifying the needs and opinions of villagers on the future use of the school facilities.

Its main focus is to look at the future use of the swimming pool, sports hall, gymnasium, grass pitches and designated community rooms for further education and craft courses.

The consultation is part of a potential future bid for funding to improve the school facilities, such as new changing rooms for the swimming pool so locals could use it outside of school, and to also make improvements to the gymnasium.

Consultations will be held in Sherburn, Barkston Ash, Church Fenton, South Milford and Monk Fryston. Posters will be put up around the villages advertising where the consultation questionaires can be picked up and returned and where certain consultation events will take place.
